Red Scarf Chair
Alvaro Barrera
🇺🇸 English
[Verse 1]
There’s a red scarf on the chair
Still folded like you left it there
Your tea ring rests on the wood
And every room remembers good
You laughed with both hands open wide
Made even grief step back outside
Now the rain taps on the pane
And I still say your name
[Pre-Chorus]
We keep the chair by the window
We keep the flowers in line
We keep your stories moving
Like they’re still alive
[Chorus]
We carry you home
We carry you home
In the bread, in the light
In the names that we know
We carry you home
We carry you home
You’re gone from the room
But you’re not from our soul
[Verse 2]
Your blue coat hangs by the door
Where you’d be late and smiling more
You’d say, “Don’t waste a single day”
Then you’d make us all obey
There’s soup on the stove again
And your old songs on the wind
We miss the weight of your hand
But we still understand
[Pre-Chorus]
We keep the chair by the window
We keep the flowers in line
We keep your stories moving
Like they’re still alive
[Chorus]
We carry you home
We carry you home
In the bread, in the light
In the names that we know
We carry you home
We carry you home
You’re gone from the room
But you’re not from our soul
[Bridge]
If love could build a bridge
It would reach where you are
Over every hard goodbye
Over every scar
So we speak your name slowly
Like a prayer, like a song
And the house learns your shape
Even after you’re gone
[Final Chorus]
We carry you home
We carry you home
In the bread, in the light
In the names that we know
We carry you home
We carry you home
You’re gone from the room
But you’re not from our soul
We carry you home
We carry you home
Red scarf on the chair
And your love in our bones
Great-grandpa Walter, I am proud to carry your name. I hope I live long enough to make you proud to have given it to me.

Dad read two newspapers every morning until the very end. Said you had to know what was happening in the world so you could decide what to do about it.

My father was not a man of many words. Every word he did say, he meant completely. I am still learning from them.
